Japanese name: クルマユリ(車百合) Scientific name:Lilium medeoloides var. medeoloides
[Overview]
A perennial 30–100 cm tall, growing in subalpine grasslands and similar places.
Underground it has a spherical bulb about 2 cm in diameter.
The scales are white, not bitter, and jointed.
Near the middle of the stem, simple leaves are borne in 1–3 tiers in whorls.
The leaves are lanceolate, 5–15 cm long, with small projections on the margin.
A few small leaves are borne alternately on the upper part of the stem.
A raceme at the top of the stem bears one to several flowers facing sideways to diagonally downward.
There are 6 tepals, 3–4 cm long and reddish orange, with dark spots on the inner surface.
The tips of the tepals are strongly recurved.
The pollen is reddish brown.
The fruit is an obovate capsule about 2 cm long.
[Notes]
The Japanese name likens the whorled leaves to the spokes of a wheel.
