Lilium leichtlinii f. leichtlinii

[Overview]
A perennial 70–150 cm tall.
It is found in mountain grasslands and similar places.
Underground it has a fleshy, white, oblate bulb.
Stolons extend into the soil from the bulb.
White cottony hairs grow densely from the upper part of the stem to the buds.
Leaves are simple and alternate, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, with entire margins.
There is no leaf stalk.
There are no bulbils (propagules) in the leaf axils.
A raceme to panicle at the top of the stem bears several to a dozen or so flowers that open facing obliquely downward.
The flowers are funnel-shaped.
The tepals are strongly recurved, 6–8 cm long and yellow, with blackish-brown spots on the inner surface.
The style of the pistil is longer than the ovary.
The fruit is a capsule.

[Cultivation]
Propagate by seed, scale cuttings or small bulblets.
It prefers partial shade out of the afternoon sun, and well-drained soil rich in humus.
Avoid excess moisture and ensure good drainage and ventilation.
In winter, protect it from cold wind.
For potted plants, water when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, watering is unnecessary unless it becomes severely dry.
As a base fertilizer, give a slow-release fertilizer mainly of phosphorus and potassium, and from spring until the flowering period apply a top dressing with equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
Pests and diseases include virus disease, rot and aphids.
