Japanese name: コバイケイソウ (小梅蕙草)
Scientific name: Veratrum stamineum var. stamineum

Veratrum stamineum var. stamineum

[Overview]
A perennial 50–100 cm tall, growing in sunny, moist grasslands from the mountains to the subalpine zone, and sometimes seen in Erman's birch forests.
The stem is thick and erect.
Leaves are simple and alternate; those from the middle of the stem upward are broadly elliptical, 10–20 cm long and about 5–10 cm wide, almost hairless, with lengthwise wrinkles, and the leaf base forms a sheath clasping the stem.
The leaves on the lower part of the stem become scale-like and surround the stem.
A large panicle appears at the stem tip.
The flowers are white and 6-petaled, with bisexual and male flowers; the male flowers are often borne on side branches.
The stamens are longer than the tepals.
The fruit is an elliptical capsule about 2–2.5 cm long.

[Notes]
It is a poisonous plant.
