Scientific name: Veratrum maackii var. maackioides

Veratrum maackii var. maackioides

[Overview]
A perennial 30–80 cm tall, growing in mountain forests, moist grasslands and similar places.
It has a thick, short underground stem.
Leaves are simple and alternate, clustered on the lower part of the stem; they are lanceolate, 20–30 cm long and up to 3 cm wide, with lengthwise wrinkles, pointed at the tip, and hairless.
The leaf base forms a sheath clasping the stem, and fibers of old leaf sheaths remain at the base of the stem like palm hairs.
The leaves on the upper part of the stem are sparse and small.
A panicle at the stem tip bears curly hairs.
The flowers are of two kinds, male and bisexual.
The flowers are purplish brown to dark brown, 6-petaled, about 1 cm across, and the stamens are 1/2 the length of the tepals.
The flower stalk is 1–1.7 cm long.
The fruit is an elliptical capsule about 2 cm long.
