Japanese name: ヒロハアオヤギソウ (広葉青柳草)
Scientific name: Veratrum maackii var. parviflorum

Veratrum maackii var. parviflorum

[Overview]
A perennial 50–100 cm tall, growing in mountain forests, moist grasslands and similar places.
It has a thick, short underground stem.
Leaves are simple and alternate, clustered on the lower part of the stem; they are oblong, 20–30 cm long and 6–10 cm wide, with lengthwise wrinkles, pointed at the tip, and hairless.
The leaf base forms a sheath clasping the stem, and fibers of old leaf sheaths remain at the base of the stem like palm hairs.
The leaves on the upper part of the stem are sparse and small.
A panicle at the stem tip bears curly hairs.
The bracts of the inflorescence are lanceolate and do not project beyond the flowers.
The flowers are of two kinds, male and bisexual.
The flowers are yellowish green, 6-petaled, 0.8–1 cm across, and the stamens are 1/2 the length of the tepals.
The flower stalk is 0.4–1 cm long.
The fruit is an elliptical capsule 1.5–2 cm long.
