Japanese name: ミヤマエンレイソウ(深山延齢草) Scientific name:Trillium tschonoskii
[Overview]
A perennial 20–40 cm tall, growing in moist woodland such as beech forests in the mountains.
It has a thick, short rhizome.
1–3 stems stand erect, with 3 leaves in a whorl at the tip of each.
The leaves are ovate-rhombic, about 6–15 cm long and equally wide, with entire margins and abruptly pointed tips.
A single flower is borne at the center of the leaves.
The flower has 3 green outer tepals and 3 white inner tepals, sometimes with pale reddish purple streaks, and the inner tepals are longer than the outer tepals.
The fruit is a spherical berry 1–2 cm across that ripens green.
It is difficult to distinguish from Enreiso when not in flower.
[Notes]
The Japanese name was given because it tends to grow at higher elevations than Enreiso.
