Cynoglossum

Cynoglossum (genus, "Shinogurossamu")

Japanese name: シノグロッサム
Scientific name: Cynoglossum

Cynoglossum

[Overview]
A biennial or perennial.
Many of them are covered with abundant hairs.
The leaves consist of basal leaves and alternate leaves on the stem, both simple and entire.
A raceme or panicle is produced at the stem tip.
The flowers are blue, white, pink and so on; the corolla is 5-lobed and has appendages in the throat.
The fruit is a schizocarp densely covered with hooked hairs.

[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed.
In cold regions it is treated as an annual sown in spring, and elsewhere as an annual sown in autumn.
It dislikes transplanting, so sow directly where it is to grow, or sow in plastic pots and then plant out.
It prefers sunny, well-drained soil.
In regions with hot summers, it is best to let it spend the summer in cool partial shade.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient.
If fertilizer is applied at planting, no further fertilizer is particularly needed.
Pests and diseases include powdery mildew and aphids.
