Japanese name: オニルリソウ (鬼瑠璃草)
Scientific name: Cynoglossum asperrimum

Cynoglossum asperrimum

[Overview]
A biennial 60–120 cm tall, found at forest edges and similar places in the mountains.
The whole plant is covered with coarse hairs, and those on the stem are as long as 2 mm.
The stem is erect and branches in the upper part.
There are basal leaves and leaves arranged alternately on the stem; both are simple and entire, and the basal leaves have withered by the flowering season.
The stem leaves are oblong-lanceolate, 10–20 cm long and 2–3.5 cm wide, thin in texture, pointed at the tip and base, and have short petioles.
The leaves in the upper part of the stem are almost sessile.
A long raceme at the stem tip bears sparsely arranged flowers.
The flowers are 0.3 cm across, and the corolla is 5-lobed and pale bluish purple.
The flower stalks are 2–3 mm long at flowering and extend to about 5 mm in fruit.
The fruit is a schizocarp (splits into segments) with dense hooked spines.
