Japanese name: ヒメエニシダ (姫金雀枝、姫金雀児)
Scientific name: Cytisus ×spachianus

Cytisus ×spachianus

[Overview]
A deciduous shrub 1 m tall, a hybrid of Cytisus canariensis and Cytisus stenosepalus.
It produces many thin green branches from the base and branches well.
The leaves are alternate, trifoliate, about 1 cm long.
Racemes 12–15 cm long bear yellow papilionaceous flowers in numbers great enough to cover the plant.

[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed or cuttings.
To promote germination, soak freshly collected seeds in 80°C water for 30 minutes, leave them in the water for half a day to 2 days, and then sow.
It can overwinter outdoors in regions without frost.
It prefers a sunny, well-drained, somewhat dry site.
Poor drainage damages the roots during the rainy season or long autumn rains and can kill the plant, and poor sunlight reduces flowering.
It cannot be planted in overly wet places where water stagnates.
Large plants are difficult to transplant.
For potted plants, and for young plants even in the ground, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries.
For rooted plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient.
Apply organic fertilizer around the base of the plant as fertilizer in winter.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
It suffers from replant problems (continuous cropping injury).
