Cirsium senumae ("Kakudaazami")

Japanese name: カクダアザミ (角田薊)
Scientific name: Cirsium senumae

[Overview]
A perennial endemic to the Yahiko and Kakuda mountains of Niigata.
The stem is erect or slightly ascending, sometimes branching in the upper part.
There are basal leaves and stem leaves; the basal leaves have withered by flowering time.
The stem leaves are alternate and tend to cluster in the middle of the stem; they are either pinnately divided or undivided with spiny teeth on the margins.
They have petioles, and the bases slightly clasp the stem.
Several flower heads are borne in a raceme at the stem tip.
The flower heads are reddish purple and face downward.
The involucre is bell-shaped to cylindrical, and the involucral bracts are reflexed or spreading, in 8–9 rows.
The inner and middle involucral bracts have glands, but they are not sticky.
The fruit is an achene with white pappus.
