Japanese name: ユッカ ロストラタ Scientific name:Yucca rostrata
[Overview]
An evergreen shrub 3–5 m tall.
The trunk is usually single.
Many leaves are arranged alternately in a rosette at the top of the trunk, looking as if a great many leaves radiate outward.
The leaves are bluish gray.
They are linear, about 60 cm long and 1.5 cm wide, with pointed tips.
The leaves remain on the trunk for a long time after dying.
A panicle up to 1 m long emerges at the top of the trunk and bears many flowers.
The flowers are white, bell-shaped, with 6 petals.
The fruit is a capsule.
[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed or cuttings.
It is highly cold-hardy, so it can overwinter outdoors except in cold regions.
It prefers a sunny, well-drained site.
It is better kept on the dry side: for potted plants, water thoroughly after the soil has dried, and for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient.
If organic fertilizer is applied as base fertilizer together with a small amount of lime, no further feeding is needed for several years, but for potted plants a small amount of slow-release fertilizer may be applied in spring.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
