Cupressus macrocarpa ‘Goldcrest’

[Overview]
A cultivar of Monterey cypress.
An evergreen coniferous tree.
The tree shape is conical.
The leaves are scale-like, soft and golden.
Crushing the leaves gives off a fragrance.

[Cultivation]
Propagate by cuttings.
It is sensitive to cold, so outdoor cultivation suits Kanto and areas to the south, and cold winter winds should be avoided.
Heavy-snow regions are also unsuitable because the branches break.
It prefers a sunny, well-drained, fertile soil.
In poor light the leaf color is poor.
The roots are shallow and the tree topples in strong wind, so strong winds should be avoided.
It dislikes being transplanted when mature.
The leaves wither if the plant runs short of water, but if it is too humid the inside of the tree becomes stuffy and pests and diseases occur easily.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries, and keep it slightly on the dry side in winter.
For plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient except when sunny weather continues in summer and the soil dries out.
Apply slow-release fertilizer at the base of the plant when the buds sprout in spring.
It tolerates shearing.
To maintain the tree shape and to keep the inside of the tree from becoming stuffy, thin out branches and pinch off leaf tips as appropriate from spring to autumn.
