Japanese name: エゾヨモギギク(蝦夷蓬菊) Scientific name:Tanacetum vulgare var. boreale
[Overview]
A perennial 60–70 cm tall.
It has long creeping underground stems.
The stem branches in the upper part.
The leaves are alternate, 15–25 cm long and 7–11 cm wide, deeply twice-pinnately divided, and the base clasps the stem.
The first-order pinnae number 12 pairs; the second-order pinnae are lanceolate, 2–3 mm wide, with sharp teeth, and have gland dots on the surface.
Sparse cobwebby hairs grow on both sides of the leaf.
The main axis between the pinnae is also toothed.
Dense corymbs are produced at the stem tips, bearing yellow flower heads about 1 cm across.
The heads consist only of tubular florets and are hemispherical.
The leaves and flower heads have a distinctive strong fragrance resembling camphor.
[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed, by cuttings, or by division.
It prefers a sunny, well-drained site.
It is easy to grow, but it spreads by underground stems, so if overgrowth is a concern, make a barrier in the soil.
