Senecio nemorensis

Senecio nemorensis ("Kion")

Japanese name: キオン (黄苑)
Scientific name: Senecio nemorensis

Senecio nemorensis

[Overview]
A perennial 50–100 cm tall, found in grassland in the mountains.
The stem does not branch.
There are basal leaves and stem leaves; the basal leaves and the leaves on the lower part of the stem have withered by flowering time.
The leaves on the stem are simple and alternate, lanceolate to oblong, with toothed margins.
The petiole is absent or short, and the leaf base half clasps the stem.
Many yellow flower heads, about 1.7–2.5 cm across, are borne in corymbs on the upper part of the stem.
Each flower head has 5 ray florets around the edge and tubular florets in the center.
The involucre is cylindrical, 6–7 mm long, with small linear bracts at the base.
The achene is 3.5–4 mm long and has a white pappus.

[Uses]
The whole plant is used medicinally.

[Notes]
The Japanese name arose because this plant has yellow flowers, in contrast to Shion (紫苑), which has purple flowers.
