Eupatorium makinoi

Eupatorium makinoi ("Hiyodoribana")

Japanese name: ヒヨドリバナ (鵯花)
Scientific name: Eupatorium makinoi

Eupatorium makinoi

[Overview]
A perennial 1–1.5 m tall, found in sunny grasslands and at forest edges.
The stem is erect, branches in the upper part, and bears short hairs.
The leaves are simple, opposite or alternate, broadly ovate to elliptic, 10–18 cm long.
The leaf margins have sharp teeth.
Both leaf surfaces are sparsely covered with curly short hairs, and the underside has glandular dots.
Many white to pale purple flower heads are borne in corymbs on the upper part of the stem.
The flower heads consist only of tubular flowers, and the style protrudes out of the flower.
The fruit is an achene with a white pappus.

[Notes]
It is said to have been given this name because it blooms around the time when brown-eared bulbuls (hiyodori) call often.
