Phlox subulata

Phlox subulata (moss phlox, "Shibazakura")

Japanese name: シバザクラ (芝桜)
Scientific name: Phlox subulata

Phlox subulata

[Overview]
A perennial about 10 cm tall.
The stems creep along the ground, rooting at the nodes, and spread like turf.
Leaves are simple and opposite, linear, about 2 cm long and 2 mm wide, with pointed tips and entire margins.
Cymes at the stem tips bear so many flowers that they cover the plant.
The flowers are about 1–2 cm across, and the corolla is 5-lobed and opens flat.
Flower colors are varied, including red, deep pink, pink, bluish purple and white.

[Cultivation]
Propagate by division and cuttings.
It prefers a sunny, well-drained, somewhat dry place.
It dislikes humidity, and in poorly drained places the plant may rot, so care is needed.

[Notes]
The name comes from its growth habit and the shape of its flowers.
