A deciduous tree 10–20 m tall.

The twigs have 4 ridges and short hairs.
The leaves are simple, opposite or often alternate at the branch tips, elliptic to ovate, 6–10 cm long and 2–4 cm wide, with entire margins.
Panicles 10–20 cm long emerge from the branch tips and bear many flowers.
The inflorescence has short hairs.
The flowers are white and 6-petaled, 1.5 cm across, and the petals are irregularly crinkled.
The fruit is a capsule, and the seeds are winged.
[Cultivation]
Propagate by cuttings.
Propagation from seed is also possible, but it takes years to flower.
It is not particular about soil as long as the site is sunny and well drained.
In poor sunlight, flowering is poor.
For plants within one year of planting in the ground, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for established plants, rainfall is sufficient.
Apply basal fertilizer, and also bury organic fertilizer around the plant as fertilizer in winter.
Pests and diseases include powdery mildew and scale insects.
