Phedimus aizoon var. aizoon ("Hosobanokirinso")

Japanese name: ホソバノキリンソウ (細葉麒麟草)
Scientific name: Phedimus aizoon var. aizoon

Phedimus aizoon var. aizoon

[Overview]
A perennial growing in mountain grasslands and similar places.
It has a rhizome.
The roots usually thicken into a spindle shape.
The leaves are simple and alternate, elliptic to rhombic-elliptic, 3–8 cm long and 1–2 cm wide, with even serrations except at the base.
The leaves are fleshy.
One or two flower stems rise upright from the leaf axils at the base of the previous year's flower stems, which remain underground or at ground level; they reach 20–50 cm tall and bear a three-branched cyme at the tip, densely covered with flowers.
The inflorescence has leaf-like bracts.
The flowers are deep yellow with 5 petals.
The fruit is a follicle.

[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed, by division, or by stem cuttings.
It prefers sunny, well-drained soil.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient.
Almost no fertilizer is needed if fertilizer is applied at planting; too much makes the plant leggy and prone to falling over, so use it sparingly.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
