Japanese name: トウゴクサバノオ (東国鯖尾)
Scientific name: Dichocarpum trachyspermum

Dichocarpum trachyspermum

[Overview]
A biennial 5–30 cm tall, found in forests.
The whole plant is hairless and soft.
It has a very short rhizome.
The leaves are of two kinds, basal leaves and leaves opposite on the stem. Both are pedately compound, and the terminal leaflet is fan-shaped to broadly ovate, 0.5–2 cm in both length and width.
The leaf margins have coarse teeth.
At the tip of a flower stalk 0.5–3 cm long, 1–2 flowers 0.5–1 cm across are borne.
The 5 petal-like sepals, yellowish white to pale yellowish green, are conspicuous in the flower.
The petals are orange nectaries shaped like a gunbai (war fan).
Cleistogamous flowers are borne near the base of the stem.
The fruit is a follicle; the two follicles spread almost horizontally.
The seeds are spherical, 0.1 cm in diameter, with a dull surface densely covered with small projections.

[Notes]
The Japanese name compares the shape of the fruit to the tail of a mackerel.
