Zoysia pacifica (Mascarene grass, "Koraishiba")

Japanese name: コウライシバ (高麗芝)
Scientific name: Zoysia pacifica

[Overview]
A perennial growing on cliffs and similar places on the coast exposed to sea breezes.
The hard stems creep long over sand and rock like vines, rooting at the nodes and spreading while branching.
The leaves are alternate, linear, 3–8 cm long and no more than 0.1 cm wide, with pointed tips; they roll inward and become hairlike or needlelike.
The flower stalk is erect, 5–15 cm tall, and bears an upright flower spike 1–2 cm long densely set with spikelets.
The spikelets are flattened and elliptic-lanceolate, about 3 mm long and 0.8 mm wide, 3–4 times as long as wide, consist of one floret, and have no awn.

[Uses]
It is resistant to trampling and salt damage, and is cultivated as a lawn grass.
