Japanese name: オオアブラススキ (大油薄)
Scientific name: Spodiopogon sibiricus

Spodiopogon sibiricus

[Overview]
A perennial about 1 m tall, growing in sunny grasslands at low elevations in the mountains.
It has a long rhizome covered with hard scale-like leaves.
The culm (stem) is erect.
The leaves are linear, 15–40 cm long and 0.8–1.5 cm wide.
An erect, conical flower spike 15–25 cm long appears at the stem tip; several smooth branches arise at each node, and the upper half of each branch bears 7–11 spikelets.
The spikelets are narrowly ovate, borne in pairs of one stalked and one sessile, and have short hairs.
The lemma of the second floret has an awn 0.7–1.2 cm long.

[Notes]
The Japanese name derives from its oily gloss.
