Spodiopogon cotulifer var. cotulifer

Spodiopogon cotulifer var. cotulifer ("Aburasusuki")

Japanese name: アブラススキ (油薄)
Scientific name: Spodiopogon cotulifer var. cotulifer

Spodiopogon cotulifer var. cotulifer

[Overview]
A perennial 0.8–1.5 m tall, growing in sunny grasslands such as on hills.
It secretes a substance with a stink bug-like smell from parts such as the central axis of the inflorescence.
The culm (stem) is erect.
The leaves are linear, 40–60 cm long and 1–1.5 cm wide, with a rough surface and a conspicuous white main vein.
The base of the lower leaves gradually narrows, forming a long petiole-like part between the leaf and the leaf sheath.
A panicle-like flower spike 20–30 cm long is borne at the stem tip; its tip droops, and branches with long slender stalks hang down sparsely.
The branches are 3–5 cm long, and the lanceolate spikelets, tinged with purplish brown, occur in pairs of one long-stalked and one short-stalked.
The lemma of the second floret has a long awn.

[Notes]
The Japanese name derives from its oily gloss.
