Japanese name: ミカヅキグサ (三日月草)
Scientific name: Rhynchospora alba

Rhynchospora alba

[Overview]
A perennial 10–75 cm tall, found in raised bogs.
The rhizome is short, and the stems grow in tufts, cylindrical to bluntly 3-angled, about 0.5 mm in diameter.
The leaves are shorter than the stems, very thin and thread-like, with margins rolled inward.
At the stem tip it bears 1–4 corymb-like partial inflorescences 1–1.5 cm long, and each spike consists of 1–6 spikelets.
Each spikelet consists of one floret, and the scales are white to pale brown and glossy.
There are 8–15 bristle-like perianth segments, longer than the fruit and rough with downward-pointing small barbs, but with upward-pointing small barbs only at the base.
The fruit is an obovate achene.

[Notes]
The name is said to compare the spikelets to a crescent moon.
