Japanese name: ハナツルボラン (花蔓穂蘭)
Scientific name: Asphodelus fistulosus

Asphodelus fistulosus

[Overview]
An annual or short-lived perennial 40–70 cm tall.
It has a fleshy underground stem.
Many leaves emerge from the base; they are cylindrical, 15–30 cm long, and hollow.
The stem is hollow, sometimes branched, and bears a raceme to panicle in the upper part.
The flowers are 1–2 cm across, white to very pale pink, with 6 tepals that open in a star shape.
A brown to reddish purple vertical stripe runs down the center of each tepal.
There are 6 stamens, thickened in a club shape in the upper part.
The fruit is a capsule.

[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed.
It prefers a sunny, well-drained place and suits deep sandy soil.
For potted plants, water thoroughly after the soil has dried; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient.
If fertilizer is applied at planting, no further fertilizing is particularly necessary.
Aphids can occur.
