Peristylus flagellifer ("Mukagotonbo")

Japanese name: ムカゴトンボ (零余子蜻蛉)
Scientific name: Peristylus flagellifer

[Overview]
A perennial 20–50 cm tall, found in sunny wetlands.
It has an ovate corm underground, and the stem is erect.
The leaves tend to gather toward the lower part of the stem; the lower 3–5 are broadly lanceolate, 4–10 cm long and 1–2.5 cm wide, with pointed tips and entire margins.
The several upper leaves are small and scale-like, pressed against the stem and inconspicuous.
A spike 7–25 cm long bears somewhat more flowers in its upper part.
The flowers are pale green, 5–6 mm across, and the dorsal sepal and lateral petals join to form a hood.
The lip is 3-lobed near the base, and the side lobes become thin and whisker-like.
It has a club-shaped spur 3–4 mm long.
The sepals have one vein.
The plant turns black when dried.

[Notes]
The Japanese name means a Tonbo-so that resembles Mukago-so.
