Arisaema ringens ("Musashiabumi")

Japanese name: ムサシアブミ (武蔵鐙)
Scientific name: Arisaema ringens

Arisaema ringens

[Overview]
A perennial commonly found in slightly moist forests near the coast.
There is a flattened-spherical corm underground, bearing several cormlets.
There are 2 leaves, each with 3 leaflets.
The leaflets are rhombic-broadly ovate, 8–20 cm long and 4–10 cm wide, abruptly pointed at the tip, and entire.
The flower stalk is 3–10 cm long, lower than the petiole, and bears at its tip a spadix 8 cm long; the white appendage at the tip of the inflorescence is a thick rod 4–9 cm long.
The spadix is enclosed by the spathe.
The tube of the spathe is pale green, and the limb is dark purple or pale green.
The fruit ripens red.

[Notes]
The Japanese name compares the shape of the spathe, whose upper part curls inward, to an abumi (stirrup) made in Musashi Province.
