Polystichum neolobatum ("Yashainode")

Japanese name: ヤシャイノデ (夜叉猪手)
Scientific name: Polystichum neolobatum

An evergreen fern growing on wooded slopes along mountain streams.

The rhizome is erect and massive, and bears its leaves in tufts.
The base of the leaf stalk and the rhizome are densely covered with scales.
The scales are usually about 2 cm long, broadly ovate, brown and soft and papery, with irregular projections on the margin.
The leaf stalk is 8–20 cm long, and like the rachis it is densely covered with scales.
The scales of the leaf stalk and rachis are lanceolate and brown, and vary in size.
The fronds are bipinnately compound, narrowly lanceolate, 25–60 cm long and 5–13 cm wide, and thick and leathery.
There are 25 or more pairs of pinnae, which are oblong-lanceolate.
The pinnules end in a sharp, spiny point.
The upper surface of the frond is hairless, and the underside bears reddish brown, linear scales.
The sori are borne along the midrib of the pinnules, and the indusium is large, entire or wavy-margined, and persistent.
