Botrychium nipponicum var. nipponicum ("Akahanawarabi")

Japanese name: アカハナワラビ (赤花蕨)
Scientific name: Botrychium nipponicum var. nipponicum

Botrychium nipponicum var. nipponicum

A wintergreen terrestrial fern found in mountain forests and sunny grasslands.
The rootstock is short and upright, and produces many thick roots.
One leaf emerges from the rootstock each year.
The sterile leaf is about 10 cm in both length and width, and is divided in a ternate manner into three pinnate divisions.
The lower pinnae are broadly ovate and stalked; the lobes are oblong to lanceolate with sharp teeth on the margins.
The leaves turn red in winter.
The stalk of the sterile leaf is 3–13 cm.
The fertile leaf emerges from autumn to winter and is far taller than the sterile leaf, reaching about 50 cm.
The fertile leaf is once to twice pinnately divided and bears sporangia directly on short branches, so that the whole looks like a panicle.
The fertile leaf withers after releasing its spores.
