Miltonia moreliana

Japanese name: ミルトニア モレリアナ
Scientific name: Miltonia moreliana

[Overview]
An evergreen perennial.
An epiphytic orchid.
The pseudobulbs are slightly flattened, ovoid to spindle-shaped, and bear 2 leaves at the tip.
The leaves are long, tongue-shaped, oblong-lanceolate, about 20 cm long, and leathery.
A long flower stalk emerges from the axil of the pseudobulb and bears a single flower at the tip.
The flower is about 7–10 cm across and a glossy dark deep purple; the sepals and petals are oblong and the lip is obovate.

[Cultivation]
Propagate by division.
It is generally grown in unglazed clay pots, planted in sphagnum moss.
Keep it at 13°C or above for overwintering; it dislikes summer heat and humidity, and the plant weakens above 30°C.
Grow it in a well-ventilated place in partial shade with about 30% shading in spring and autumn and about 50% in summer, and bring it into a sunny place in winter.
From spring to autumn, water thoroughly when the surface of the potting material dries; when temperatures drop, water about 2 days after the surface has dried.
It prefers high humidity in the air, so mist the leaves with a sprayer.
From March to May, apply diluted liquid fertilizer about twice a month.
Pests and diseases include spider mites and scale insects.

[Notes]
The abbreviation of the genus name is "Milt."
In the orchid family, where intergeneric hybrids are numerous, abbreviations of the major genus names are sometimes set to simplify hybrid formulas and prevent confusion.
