Japanese name: ショウジョウヤシ(猩々椰子) Scientific name:Cyrtostachys renda
[Overview]
A palm that grows wild in swampy areas along rivers in tropical rainforest and reaches a height of over 10 m.
It grows slowly; the stems are slender, cylindrical and green, produced in large numbers to form a clump, with ring-shaped leaf scars remaining, and have no spines.
The scarlet to bright red leaf rachises and leaf sheath tubes are conspicuous.
The leaves are alternate and pinnately compound, arching, with linear to lanceolate, stiff leaflets that are grayish green on the underside.
Spadix inflorescences hang down from beneath the leaves and bear small greenish-white flowers.
The fruit is ovoid, about 1 cm long, and ripens black.
[Cultivation]
Propagate by division or from seed.
To overwinter it, place it in a bright place indoors in winter so that a temperature of 13°C or higher is maintained.
It prefers sun, good ventilation, well-drained and moderately moist soil.
It dislikes strong direct sunlight, strong wind and dryness.
From spring to autumn, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries, and keep it on the dry side in winter.
Mist the leaves with a sprayer throughout the year.
From spring to autumn, apply slow-release fertilizer or liquid fertilizer.
Pests include scale insects and spider mites.
