Crepis rubra (red hawksbeard, "Momoirotanpopo")

Japanese name: モモイロタンポポ (桃色蒲公英)
Scientific name: Crepis rubra

[Overview]
An annual 30–40 cm tall.
White latex comes out when the stems or leaves are damaged.
There are basal leaves and leaves alternate on the stem; the basal leaves are about 2–15 cm long and oblanceolate or pinnately divided.
The flower stalks branch at the base into many erect stalks, each usually bearing one flower head at the tip.
The flower heads consist only of ray florets and are usually pink, though some are white.
The involucre is tubular, with 8–14 involucral bracts.
The fruit is a spindle-shaped achene with a pappus.

[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed.
It is cold-hardy, but in regions with severe cold, protect it from frost and cold wind.
It dislikes being transplanted, so sow directly or sow in pots and then plant out.
It prefers well-drained soil in a sunny, somewhat dry place, and grows well even if left alone when conditions suit it.
Take care not to let it become too wet when watering; water thoroughly after the soil surface has dried.
Fertilize sparingly.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
