Pachycereus (genus)

Japanese name: パキケレウス
Scientific name: Pachycereus

Pachycereus

[Overview]
A columnar cactus, some reaching 15 m in height.
It branches and takes on the appearance of a shrub or tree.
The plant body has 7–17 ribs, with spines growing from the areoles.
The flowers are white to pink, with many stamens.
The fruit is densely covered with spines, contains many sesame-like black seeds, and splits open when ripe.

[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed or by cuttings.
It can overwinter outdoors in regions without frost.
It prefers a sunny, well-ventilated place and should be planted in well-drained, airy soil.
It is best kept on the dry side; for potted plants, water thoroughly from spring to autumn after the soil has dried, and reduce watering in winter.
For plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient.
If basal fertilizer is applied, no further fertilizer is particularly necessary.
Take care not to overwater or overfertilize.
Scale insects can occur.
