Japanese name: ウンナンハギ(雲南萩) Scientific name:Campylotropis polyantha
[Overview]
A deciduous shrub 1–2 m tall, found in its native range on mountain slopes and in sunny mixed woodland.
It is covered with abundant hairs.
The leaves are alternate and trifoliate; the leaflets are elliptic to ovate, and a characteristic feature is that every leaf has stipels.
Racemes 2–13 cm long arise from the leaf axils and bear pink pea-shaped flowers.
The standard petal has a green marking.
It flowers mainly in spring, but continues to bloom sporadically until autumn.
The fruit is a legume containing only one seed.
[Cultivation]
Propagate by cuttings.
It prefers a sunny, airy, well-drained place.
It is best to avoid strong direct sun in summer, dry north winds in winter, and frost.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient unless summer brings a long spell of sunny weather and the soil becomes dry.
If fertilizer is applied at planting, no further fertilizing is particularly necessary, but for potted plants a small amount of fertilizer in winter may be applied, depending on how the plant is growing.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
