Abelia ‘Edward Goucher’

Japanese name: アベリア‘エドワード ゴーチャー’
Scientific name: Abelia ‘Edward Goucher’

Abelia ‘Edward Goucher’

[Overview]
A semi-evergreen shrub 0.9–1.5 m tall.
The branches arch outward.
The leaves are opposite, ovate, entire, rather thick, and glossy on the upper surface.
Young leaves and leaves in the cold season are tinged with brown.
Short panicles at the tips of the current year's branches bear many flowers.
The flowers are bell-shaped, about 2 cm long, shallowly 5-lobed at the tip, purplish pink, with an orange net-like pattern inside the corolla.
The sepals are large and tinged with purplish brown, and their number is not fixed.

[Cultivation]
Propagate by cuttings or division.
In cold regions it loses its leaves or the branch tips die back, and it is also susceptible to snow, so it is not suited to areas with heavy snowfall.
It prefers sun to partial shade and soil that is well drained, moisture-retentive and rich in humus.
In good sun the leaves become denser.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient unless summer brings a long spell of sunny weather and the soil becomes dry.
Apply slow-release chemical fertilizer or organic fertilizer around the plant as fertilizer in winter.
There are no particular pests or diseases.

[Notes]
It was produced by crossing Abelia (Abelia ×grandiflora) and Abelia schumannii (Abelia schumannii).
