Brugmansia (genus, Angel's Trumpet)

Japanese name: エンジェルス トランペット
Scientific name: Brugmansia

Brugmansia

[Overview]
A shrub or small tree.
The leaves are simple and alternate, large, with wavy or smooth margins.
The flowers are borne singly in the leaf axils, trumpet-shaped to tubular with a widely open tip, and hang downward.
The corolla is shallowly 5-lobed, and the tips are pointed like horns.
Many of the flowers are fragrant.
Flower colors include white, orange, yellow and pink, and some have double flowers.
The calyx is long and tubular.

[Cultivation]
Propagate by cuttings.
It can overwinter in the open ground if it is not exposed to freezing or frost.
It prefers sunny, well-drained, fertile soil.
For potted plants, from spring to autumn water thoroughly when the soil surface dries, and keep it on the dry side in winter.
For plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient unless summer brings a long spell of sunny weather and the soil dries out.
Do not let fertilizer run out during the growing season from spring to autumn; apply solid fertilizer such as oil cake.
If not pruned, it becomes leggy and loses its shape, so it is better to cut it back hard in early winter.
Pests include armyworms, spider mites and aphids.
