Japanese name: ヘリクリサム ペティオラレ Scientific name:Helichrysum petiolare
[Overview]
An evergreen shrub about 45 cm tall.
The whole plant is densely covered with soft white hairs and has a felt-like texture.
The stems become woody and extend long sideways while branching.
The leaves are simple and alternate, round to heart-shaped, 4–5 cm long.
The leaves are said to have a faint scent of licorice.
At the tips of long flower stalks, flower heads about 1 cm across with yellowish-white involucres are borne in corymbs.
The flower heads consist only of yellow tubular florets.
The fruit is an achene.
[Cultivation]
Propagate by cuttings.
It prefers a sunny, well-drained place.
It can overwinter if not exposed to heavy frost.
Take care not to overwater; water thoroughly after the soil has dried, and especially in midsummer water sparingly.
It is better to fertilize sparingly.
Because the branches and leaves grow densely, the plant can rot if it becomes stuffy in summer.
Before the rainy season, thin out crowded branches or cut the plant back heavily.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
