Japanese name: ヘンリーヅタ Scientific name:Parthenocissus henryana
[Overview]
A deciduous woody climber.
Young branches are square in cross section.
Tendrils with tips that form adhesive discs grow opposite the leaves, and the plant attaches to other objects with these discs.
The tendrils branch into 4–7 parts.
As the trunk thickens, many aerial roots appear.
Leaves are alternate and palmately compound with 5 leaflets.
The leaflets are ovate to oblong, 3–10 cm long and 1.5–5 cm wide, with silvery white patterns along the veins.
The leaf margins are toothed.
The leaves turn red in autumn.
Cymes bear small green 5-petaled flowers.
The fruit is a spherical berry 0.8–1 cm across, ripening bluish black with a white bloom on the surface.
[Cultivation]
Propagate by division or cuttings.
It prefers sun to partial shade and fertile, well-drained soil.
With poor sunlight, the autumn color develops poorly.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient.
For potted plants, apply slow-release chemical fertilizer placed on the soil from spring to autumn.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
