Lonicera periclymenum (honeysuckle)
Japanese name: ハニーサックル
Scientific name: Lonicera periclymenum
[Overview]
A semi-evergreen climbing shrub.
The vines twist to the right, branch well, and grow to about 4–7 m, becoming woody at the base.
The leaves are simple and opposite, ovate to elliptic, about 6.5 cm long and 4 cm wide, with entire margins.
The flowers are borne in whorl-like clusters at the stem tips; they are tubular, about 5 cm long, and 5-lobed at the tip.
The outside of the corolla is pink to purplish red, and the inside is white to cream.
The flowers are strongly fragrant at night.
The fruit is a spherical berry that ripens red.
[Cultivation]
Propagate by cuttings.
It prefers fertile, sunny, well-drained soil.
For potted plants, water thoroughly when the soil surface dries; for plants in the ground, rainfall is sufficient unless summer brings a long spell of sunny weather and the soil becomes severely dry.
In early summer, place slow-release fertilizer on the soil.
The vines do not twine very well on their own, so tie them with string to guide them.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
