Japanese name: ニセカイソウ(偽海葱) Scientific name:Albuca bracteata
[Overview]
A perennial with a bulb up to 10 cm across.
The leaves grow from the base and are linear, 30–60 cm long and 2–4 cm wide, with a tail-like pointed tip.
A flower stalk 30–80 cm tall bears about 50–100 flowers densely in a corymb to raceme.
The flowers are 2.5 cm across with 6 tepals; the inside is white with a green stripe in the center, and the outside has a conspicuous thick green stripe.
The fruit is a capsule.
[Cultivation]
Propagate by dividing bulbs.
If the bulb is grown exposed above ground, it produces many small bulbs around it.
It prefers sandy soil containing organic matter, with good sun and drainage.
It is sensitive to frost, so in winter bring it indoors or protect it in a greenhouse or similar.
Water when the soil dries, but reduce watering in summer because it goes dormant.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
