[Overview]
A deciduous shrub up to 2 m tall, growing mainly in high mountains in central Honshu.
The branches are solid and have four dull ridges.
The leaves are simple and opposite, 5–14 cm long and 2.5–5 cm wide, oblong to obovate, thin, and usually hairless except for fine hairs on the midrib.
The fine veins protrude slightly on the underside of the leaf.
The leaf margin is entire.
The flowers are borne in pairs at the tips of slender flower stalks 1.5–4.5 cm long that extend along the midrib of the leaf; each has a small bract at the base, and the stalks have minute hairs.
The flowers are two-lipped, white at first, later turning yellow, rarely tinged with purple.
The upper lip of the corolla is shallowly 4-lobed, and the lower lip hangs down.
The fruit is a spherical berry; two berries are fused into a gourd shape and ripen red.
