Saussurea sugimurae ("Nanbutohiren")

Japanese name: ナンブトウヒレン (南部唐飛廉)
Scientific name: Saussurea sugimurae

A perennial 30–120 cm tall, growing in dry grassland in the mountains.
It has an underground stem.
The stem is erect and winged.
The basal leaves have withered by flowering time.
The leaves are simple and alternate; those on the lower part of the stem are ovate, 10–18 cm long, with sharp teeth on the margin, and have long winged petioles.
The leaves on the middle to upper part of the stem become smaller toward the top, and are ovate to rhombic with short petioles that have broad wings.
Flowers are borne sparsely in a raceme at the stem tip; they are about 2 cm across and consist only of purplish tubular florets.
The involucre is bell-shaped, 16–19 mm long and 15–18 mm wide, with cobwebby hairs, and is purple in the upper part.
The involucral bracts are in 8 rows and have long extended tips.
