Japanese name: オオモミジガサ(大紅葉傘、大紅葉笠) Scientific name:Miricacalia makinoana
[Overview]
A perennial 55–80 cm tall, found in slightly moist places such as beech forests in the mountains and deciduous forests along streams.
The whole plant is covered with coarse brown hairs.
The stem is erect and unbranched.
There are basal leaves and stem leaves; on young plants only one basal leaf appears, and it has withered by the flowering season.
Two or three stem leaves appear alternately; they are palmately divided into 9–11 lobes, and each lobe is further shallowly divided into 2–3.
The leaf stalk is attached peltately, and its base clasps the stem, but the leaf sheath does not close completely.
Leaves on the lower part of the stem are 25–33 cm across with leaf stalks 10–26 cm long, and leaves in the middle are 14–23 cm across with leaf stalks 3–12 cm long.
Yellow flower heads, each made up of about 20 florets, are borne in a raceme.
The involucre is about 1.5 cm long, and about 12 involucral bracts are arranged in a single row.
Six to seven lanceolate bracts are attached at the base of the involucre and curve backward at flowering.
The fruit is an achene 0.8–0.8 cm long, with a beak-like pointed tip and a white to pale brown pappus.
