Japanese name: ヒメブタナ(姫豚菜) Scientific name:Hypochaeris glabra
[Overview]
A biennial 10–40 cm tall, found in wasteland and along roadsides.
All the leaves are basal, oblanceolate to obovate-oblong, 2.5–20 cm long and 0.4–5.5 cm wide, irregularly wavy-lobed, with the leaf base gradually narrowing.
The leaves are almost hairless on both surfaces, with slight hairs on the margins and on the veins of the underside.
They are often tinged with red along the midrib.
An erect, branching flower stalk bears a single yellow flower head 0.5–2 cm across at its tip.
The flower stalk is hairless and has scale-like reduced leaves here and there.
The florets making up the flower head are all ligulate florets.
The involucre is green, with a single row of white hairs on the back.
The fruit is an achene with a pappus and is dispersed by the wind.
The achenes at the edge of the flower head have no beak, while the inner achenes have a beak.
