Ilex micrococca ("Tamamizuki")

Japanese name: タマミズキ (玉水木)
Scientific name: Ilex micrococca

A deciduous tree 10–25 m tall that grows in evergreen forests.
The plant is dioecious.
It is hairless overall, and young branches have ridges.
The leaves are simple and alternate, ovate-elliptic or ovate-oblong, 7–13 cm long and 3–6 cm wide, with a sharply pointed tip and fine, sharp teeth on the margin.
The petiole is 1.5–2 cm, and because the leaf base is rounded, the boundary with the petiole is clear.
The leaf texture is thin.
Compound umbels about 2 cm long arise from the leaf axils.
Both male and female flowers are about 3 mm in diameter, greenish white, with 6–8 petals.
Male inflorescences have more flowers than female inflorescences.
The fruits grow in numbers of 20–40, are spherical, about 3 mm in diameter, and ripen red.
Each fruit contains 6–8 seeds, which are triangular-oblong and about 2 mm long.
