Pedicularis resupinata subsp. teucriifolia var. caespitosa
Pedicularis resupinata subsp. teucriifolia var. caespitosa("Tomoeshiogama")
Japanese name: トモエシオガマ(巴塩竈) Scientific name:Pedicularis resupinata subsp. teucriifolia var. caespitosa
[Overview]
A perennial 20–60 cm tall, found in sunny grasslands in the subalpine to alpine zone.
The stem branches from the base.
The leaves are simple, opposite on the lower part of the stem and alternate on the upper part, narrowly ovate, with regular double serrations on the margin.
The leaf base gradually narrows into a petiole.
Flowers are borne singly in the axils of the broadly ovate ones at the stem tip, and the flower spike is dense and head-like.
The flowers are reddish purple, lip-shaped and 2 cm long, and twisted in one direction; the upper lip narrows abruptly at the tip into a pointed beak, and the lower lip is shallowly 3-lobed.
The fruit is an ovate capsule.
[Notes]
The Japanese name derives from the way the flowers look arranged in a tomoe (swirl) pattern when the flower spike is viewed from above.
