Japanese name: トウゴクシソバタツナミ (東国紫蘇葉立浪)
Scientific name: Scutellaria laeteviolacea var. abbreviata
[Overview]
A perennial 5–20 cm tall, found in slightly moist places in deciduous forests and at forest edges.
The stem stands erect from a short underground stem and is densely covered with long spreading hairs.
Leaves are simple and opposite, borne in 3–4 pairs, triangular broadly ovate, 1.5–5 cm long and 1–4 cm wide.
Both surfaces of the leaf have spreading hairs and are velvety.
The upper surface often has purple markings along the veins, the underside is often tinged with purple, and there are usually no glandular dots.
The leaf margin has 5–9 pairs of rounded, blunt teeth.
The petiole is 1–4 cm long.
Leaves become larger toward the upper part of the stem, or only the uppermost leaves are slightly smaller.
A raceme 2–6 cm long at the stem tip bears flowers in pairs, turned to one side.
The inflorescence is densely covered with spreading hairs.
The corolla is purple, about 1.8–2 cm long, and lipped; the tube bends at the base and stands up, the upper lip is helmet-shaped, and the lower lip is 3-lobed.
