[Overview]
A perennial growing on coastal rocks, sunny roadsides, wasteland and similar places.
It is hairless throughout.
The stem branches from the base, is square in cross section, and either creeps along the ground or stands up, growing to 20–60 cm long.
Leaves are simple and opposite, ovate to broadly ovate, 0.5–3.5 cm long and 0.5–2.5 cm wide, somewhat thick and glossy, with rounded tips and 3–5 pairs of rounded teeth along the margin.
There is a short leaf stalk.
It flowers all year round.
Whorled cymes arise from the leaf axils in the middle part of the stem and above, each bearing 2–8 white lipped flowers.
The corolla is about 1 cm long; the upper lip is hooded and densely covered with white hairs on the outside, and the lower lip is 3-lobed.
The calyx is tubular, 0.4–0.5 cm long, with 10 veins and 10 needle-like pointed teeth arranged alternately long and short.
In fruit the calyx becomes 0.6–0.7 cm long.
The fruit is a schizocarp.
