Ajuga makinoi ("Tachikiranso")

Japanese name: タチキランソウ (立金瘡小草)
Scientific name: Ajuga makinoi

Ajuga makinoi

[Overview]
A perennial found in the mountains.
Several stems emerge, with white curly hairs.
The stems stand upright during flowering, reaching 5–20 cm tall, and after flowering they fall over and root at the nodes.
Leaves are opposite; the 1–2 pairs on the lower part of the stem are scale-like, while the upper leaves are oblong with notched, doubly serrate margins.
Leaves at flowering time are 3–5 cm long and 1–1.5 cm wide, but summer leaves are larger, up to 8–10 cm long and 3.5 cm wide.
The upper side of the leaf is green and glossy.
The flowers grow a few at a time in the leaf axils in the upper part of the stem and are bluish purple to deep purple.
The flowers are lipped, about 1.3–1.5 cm long; the upper lip is small and 2-lobed, and the lower lip is 3-lobed.
The fruit is a mericarp.
