Japanese name: ハマヒルガオ(浜昼顔) Scientific name:Calystegia soldanella
[Overview]
A perennial growing mainly on sandy seashores, and also found on inland lakeshores such as Lake Biwa.
It has long underground stems.
The stems branch and creep over the sand.
The leaves are alternate, reniform-orbicular, about 1–5 cm across, entire-margined, thick and glossy.
The flowers are solitary in the leaf axils and bloom above the leaves.
The corolla is a pale pink pentagonal funnel shape 4–5 cm across, white in the center, with 5 white lines extending from the center.
The bracts are broadly ovate-triangular, about 0.5–1.5 cm long.
The fruit is globose, about 1.5 cm across, and the seeds are dispersed by ocean currents.
[Cultivation]
Propagate from seed or by division.
Because the seed coat is hard, scratch the surface slightly with a cutter or similar, soak in water for a day and a night, and then sow.
It prefers a sunny, well-drained, well-ventilated place and is unsuited to shady or overly wet places.
If the environment suits it, it grows well when left alone.
Rainfall is sufficient for watering.
If fertilizer is applied at planting, no further fertilizer is particularly necessary.
There are no particular pests or diseases.
