[Overview]
An annual or perennial 20–50 cm tall.
It has a burdock-like root.
The stems branch, creep or ascend to a length of about 80 cm, and are cylindrical and densely covered with white hairs.
Leaves are simple and opposite, ovate to lanceolate, 1–5 cm long and 0.5–3.5 cm wide, with a pointed tip and hairs on both surfaces.
The stipules are fused and lined with spiny hairs.
20 or more flowers gather in the inflorescence at the stem tip, and the inflorescence has 2–4 bracts, which are usually broadly ovate.
The corolla is white and funnel-shaped, usually 6-lobed, and the corolla tube is 0.3–0.8 cm long.
The calyx is 6-lobed and has short hairs on the margin.
The fruit is an oblong to obovate capsule that retains the sepals and has white hairs; when ripe it splits into three nutlets.
The ventral surface of the nutlets is not covered by the pericarp but exposed and hairless, with a distinctly raised ridge in the center and two broad grooves flanking it.
